Grilled Turkey and Swiss Sandwiches

“You threw my sandwich away! My sandwich! MY SANDWICH!”

I can’t post a recipe for a sandwich and not share a line from the episode of Friends, “The One With Ross’ Sandwich”. Goodness sakes, that is hilarious stuff!

As a stay-at-home mom I find myself making a lot of sandwiches for lunch. But I have to say, I’m a little bored with the classic peanut butter and jelly (or sometimes honey) or turkey on wheat with a little mustard. While tasty, it gets a little old.

That’s why I was happy to find a sandwich over at Jamie Cooks it Up! that was so easy to make and quite delicious. Your family is sure to love this simple and restaurant-like sandwich at your next family meal!!

Ingredients (for 8 sandwiches)

  • 1 loaf French bread (I went for what I had at home and that was slices of Orowheat! But I trust that the French loaf would be delicious.)
  • soft butter
  • 1 1/2 to 2 lb. thinly sliced turkey
  • 1 lb. thinly sliced Swiss cheese
  • 2 to 3 tomatoes

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 c. mayo
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. ground mustard
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. red onion, chopped fine
  • 1 tsp. dried thyme

Of course if you don’t want to make the sauce for your sandwiches, throw on whatever dressings you like best! Mayo, mustard…whatever tickles your fancy!

Directions

  1. Begin by making your sauce: Chop your red onion into tiny pieces. Throw it in a bowl with your mayo and ground mustard.
  2. Add the dried thyme and stir everything together until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Slice up your bread and tomatoes, and turn on your griddle or greased sauté pan to medium high. It’s easy to burn a grilled sandwich so don’t turn the heat up too high!

4. Spread a little butter on one side of each slice of bread. Turn the bottom slice with butter facing up then put the other slice with butter facing down on the first one. (This will make the next step easier.)

5. Cover the other side of the top slice of bread with sauce. You don’t even have to make a mess of your hands by picking it up!

6. Place one of the slices butter side down on the skillet or greased sauté pan. Then add two slices of cheese, a nice stack of turkey, and a couple of tomato slices. If you want you can add a couple more slices of cheese on top of the tomatoes.

7. Cover with the last slice of bread, butter side up. Let the griddle or sauté pan go to work and melt that cheese. Allow the bread to reach a golden brown color before flipping. Remove from the griddle or pan, slice in half, and serve that thing already! Enjoy!
