I love the look of dip dye - dip anything in a bright and bold drippy paint hue and it makes it cooler instantly! I decided to translate the look and feel of the dip dye into cupcakes. This DIY is cute and easy and would be so fun for a modern birthday party or super cute bridal shower or a colour-block party.
DIP DYE CUPCAKES DIY
You will need:
For the cupcakes:
Your favourite vanilla cupcake recipe (or a box mix)
Your favourite vanilla buttercream recipe (or one cannister of frosting)
A small amount of hot pink gel colour
Cupcake liners
Piping bag fitted with a large open circle tip
For the cupcake circle toppers:
Craft circle punch - I used a 1 inch wide one
Brightly coloured craft paper
Long toothpicks and clear or washi tape
3. Using a spoon, scoop out a small amount of the pink batter to line the bottoms of each cupcake wrapper, about 2 1/2 tablespoons.
4. Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out small balls of the plain coloured batter on top of the pink batter. Using a butter knife or offset spatula, spread the plain batter so it covers the pink batter. Bake according to recipe's instructions.
5. Let cupcakes cool on wire racks. In the meantime, make your buttercream (or open your frosting can!) Fit your piping bag with the large open circle tip. Pipe out perfect blobs of buttercream by holding the bag upright at a 90 degree angle with the tip pointing in the middle of the cupcake. Apply pressure until buttercream flows out and creates a blobette. Pull away to create a perfect tip.
6. Punch out craft paper in a matching colour and adhere to a wooden toothpick with matching Japanese washi tape or clear tape. Place in the centre of the buttercream to create a matching colour block element. Peel away the outer cupcake wrapper... to reveal the "dip dye"!
7. Punch out additional circles to scatter as fun confetti to display your cakes!
8. Put your cakes on a cute cake stand and dive on in! Note: unwrap your cupcakes a few minutes prior to displaying and serving to preserve moistness of your cake.
9. Take a bite and enjoy!
