Weekend Project: Glass Bottle Light Installation
I came across this really good example of a glass bottle light installation this week from the folks at Tuis magazine (out of South Africa). We've seen this done with mason jars - but I like this more updated version using clear beer bottles. Sorry mason jars. The neon coloured cords really make a difference too. Cool tip: As it's hard to find coloured light cords (in South Africa and N. America for that matter), they improvised by covering the white cord with coloured electrical tape (so so clever)! How to: Probably the hardest thing to do in this project is cut the glass and if you can pick up this magazine they have a great tutorial. I bought it through Zinio here (and they have an english version of it there as well, called Home). But if you want a really good video on it, I found a bottle cutting tutorial here on Make. (Hint: Fast forward to about 3:30 to get to the how-to). The Generation Green (g2) Bottle Cutter looks like a good option and the one being used in the Make video. The other tricky thing is hard wiring all the wires together. They show how in the magazine, but if I was making this, I think I would play it safe and take it to an electrician to do for me. They bundle the cords together with connector blocks but there's a whole bunch of wattage issues to consider, so you probably need to find a good tutorial on this if you were to tackle it yourself. Anyway - a little inspiration for a weekend project! (Photo: Francois Olberholster | Project: Ashley Stemmet). Happy Weekend!
A note to all of my Pinterest friends: Seems there's an issue at the moment where all the images pointing to my blog from Pinterest have been incorrectly marked as "inappropriate content" and because of that, one is unable to pin from our site at the moment. I'm looking into this sad matter; I'm afraid either spammers got a hold of my images or there's a bit of tampering happening. Whatever the case - I just want to thank you all for hanging in there with me with this, and if you are experiencing a similar problem, I'd like to hear from you. Seems I'm not the only one. -Jan
