Hello there, it’s Serena again from Madrid. This time I wanted to show you a little jewel almost hidden in this city. The studio/lab/store of the terrific Dutch designer Marre Moerel.
I found out about this place when some years ago a friend started working for her. I came to see an opening and I was overwhelmed and suddenly kind of jealous of my friend, who had the chance to work in this inspiring place!
You can see from Marre’s biography that she’s been around for a while: she’s been freelancing as a designer and teaching in New York for 9 years, curating exhibitions between both NY and Milan, working for established companies such as Cappellini, Celda, Offecct, Ozone, Wilson Art Int. etc. and in 2003 finally moved to Madrid, where she opened her own studio.
On the first floor you’ll find the store, a neat space where she sells her limited editions and series of lighting and tableware objects. Her work with ceramics ranges from geometric shapes to the botanical, from anatomic transfigurations to biology-inspired lamps. Aren’t these pieces beautiful?
There is a series I really love, Anthropofungo, which she created in collaboration with Santiago Morilla, a great Spanish artist who is worthy of his very own post.
I was allowed to take some pictures of the second floor, the studio and ceramics lab where she designs and creates her works. The first time I came here, I was surprised by the warm temperature, but then I realized that the actual kiln was running!
Isn’t this a little jewel of a place? If you have the chance, come and stop by and even better, if you like ceramic works there’s a big chance you’ll fall in love with something!
