{Today we welcome our first "Dispatches from France" post by Deborah Beau of Kickcan & Conkers. Deborah is joining us as a new contributor and we're looking forward to seeing France through her eyes, so please help me welcome her!}
I'd like to stay local for my first post here on Poppytalk, so today I am taking you through the narrow, Medieval streets that make up the historical centre of Montpellier to visit one of my favourite French concept stores de la luce.
Founded and owned by Olivier Badou, a talented, self-taught jeweller, who loves light and shadow, de la luce has evolved considerably over the past seven years. It recently re-opened its doors after a one-month makeover that reflects this natural transformation. Light, simplicity and the senses are key to the shop's new look.
De la luce offers a beautifully curated selection of handmade objects for the home, in addition to books, clothes, designer toys, accessories and shoes. Olivier carries big names such as Comme des Garçons and Marimekko alongside smaller, lesser-known artists, makers and designers, sourcing his products from all over the world. It's the kind of shop I could spend hours in, wanting to touch everything (those leather bags, those printed Indian cashmire and silk shawls, those old, distressed boxes...) and also just soaking up the atmosphere and seeing how people react.
Everytime I visit de la luce I discover something new - Olivier has a gift for finding local talent, and I have to say, a knack for surprises! I find that both refreshing and inspiring at a time when 'pins' seem to travel faster than the speed of light...
Are you like me I wonder? Do you ever ask yourself where design bloggers actually shop? De la luce is my little shining star in the heart of Montpellier. It's where I go for birthday and Christmas presents, for family and special friends.
