One of the hardest parts of having a boy and a girl: having a girl who only wants to wear boy clothes. I know, I know, I should let it go. But I feel like I am being deprived. Sabrina refuses to wear girly tops or bottoms. When I ask her to wear a dress for special occasions, she wails, as if I just asked her to quit eating for a year. On occasion I have offered her money—good money, I tell you—to wear dresses, and she has turned me down.
I was particularly tormented during a recent TJ Maxx fall fashion show I attended, courtesy of Audrey from Mom Generations, who has four boys and will never have to despair over a girl who won't wear any cute dresses. Some of the stuff that's hot this fall for boys: darker-wash jeans, vintage-style tees, zip-up hoodies (evidently, purple isn't hot for boys, nobody tell Max). What's in for girls: sweaters and sweater dresses with cowl necks, belts, hoods, dolman sleeves, stripes, skinny and boot leg jeans. Kids were showing off such cute clothes:
When Sabrina, Max and I recently went back to school shopping, I wasn't feeling optimistic—well, other than when Max sight read three words: school, play and TJ Maxx. I figured we could just hit the boys department at TJ Maxx for both kids, and be done. Only Sabrina actually wanted GIRL TOPS. First she picked out a two-piece sweater (aka a "two-fer") that came with a necklace ($12.99!), and a few other totally cute tops.
I was suspicious, which is what happens when you buy your kid pretty tops and dresses that sit in her closet, unused, and she will not even accept a bribe to put them on.
"Are you sure you're going to wear that stuff?" I asked.
"Yes, Mommy!" she said, sweetly.
"Are you sure?" I asked again.
"Yes!" she proclaimed.
She is so attached to the two-piece sweater she has tried to sleep in it. Look how pretty:
