This week I've been hit by the organization bug in my classroom (I'm sure my husband wishes it would hit me at home too, but one thing at a time, right?). It started with my word wall, continued with my bulletin boards, and has now moved on to my classroom library. I have quite an extensive classroom library, and take pride in the fact that previous students keep coming back to my room to borrow books. I had to buy two more bookshelves this week, as my current bookshelves are overflowing. After I set up my new shelves, I decided to reorganize all my books. I have cubbies dedicated to favourite authors, award winners, classics, genres - the usual categories. I enlisted the help of a few students today, and was quite pleased with the progress we made (organizing hundreds and hundreds of books requires a little help). I had some surprises (far more mystery books than I thought), and a few disappointments (not nearly enough poetry books). The teacher guilt hit me like a brick - am I depriving my students of a love of poetry by having neglected that genre in my classroom library? Determined to set this right, I immediately logged on to Amazon after school. I added a few books to my "cart", but would love some suggestions of tried and true favourites for my grade 6/7 classroom.
I'll start by giving one of my favourites ... my students love Sara Holbrook's poetry - they really connect to the emotions in the poetry. What do your students love?
